After the revolution of 1917, many Russianswho were the participants of the “White” movement, moved to Harbin in China. This hand-written album of poetry belonged to a Russian officer, whose military division was located in the city of Harbin, which can be seen by the notes. Many forgotten Russian songs and romances are written in this album.
The album belongs to the times of the Russian-Japanese war. The city of Harbin is located in Manchuria, which currently belongs to China. After the Russian-Chinese war a part of Manchuria went under the Russian rule, and Russia promised to return it back to China in 1903. Harbin included a settlement of Russians. The railways that go through the railway station in Harbin lead to Vladivostok and Port-Arthur. During the Russian-Japanese war, many Russian troops were situated in Harbin and Port-Arthur.
